They say "3rd time is a charm..."

Today was our follow up from our 2nd surgery last week on June 1st. Our week had been very uneventful with no falls, bumps or even un-easy turning of Skyler's pin. So we expected a smooth check up. Unfortunatly that was not the case. After the dr turned the Left pin and ordered some x rays, we noticed everything was good on the Left side (the longer side up above in the pictures) but what he noticed that made him very upset was that the side that last week they finished the turning/growing and took out the pin in the OR was now gone. There is no growth as it should be in the process of healing/hardening. What we should see is 20mm of light bone, and what we see is nothing different than last weeks xray.
The dr suspects it is a faulty device, we will know for sure tomorrow but it seems that the screws threads stripped and the device contracted back together, probably Thursday or Friday last week (the days we were discharged and more active). We were sent to the waiting room as the Dr gave the rep for the device a call to give them some "words", apparently this sweet little gray haired, peer over the rim of his glasses, feet shuffling man has a TEMPER...so the dental
assistants say :P
There isn't much way of choices at this point, no it's probably not the best idea to put Skyler back in the OR for the 3rd time in a month but we can't just leave this the way it is, his jaw is not funcitoning properly right now
We want this to be done and over with before school, so we need to find the right distractors and get the show on the road!! The dr will be using a different type of device tomorrow, one that opens from the back forward, unlike this one that opens from the middle outwards.
It is a frustrating feeling not having things go as planned. I am sad Skyler has to endure this again, and the days afterwards of pain. He is so strong, and never puts up too much of a fight. I can't even begin to tell you how amazing of a kid he is. I know that any adult would be milking this for all it's worth, and Skyler is more worried about when the next showing of BOLT will be or when he can have more pudding or Pediasure. Not one bit of complaining or saddness. I couldn't ask for a better "patient" We just hope that a fear of these sorts of visits doesn't develop and if it does that he can be comforted easily.
So Skyler will be in the OR tomorrow at 4:30, for a procdure to fix the jaw distractor that hopefully takes just over an hour.
Please continue to keep Skyler in your thoughts this weekend.
All our love
Mike Casie Skyler and Seth
